On To Granada (Mar 19)

Juancho’s B&B and Cafe

Most things seemed to go right today, well, at least until lunchtime.

The small shuttle bus arrived on time at the church on the corner to take us to Granada. Being only four of us on board, there were no subsequent pickups and the luggage stayed inside with us, so we actually arrived at our Airbnb in Granada ahead of time and were warmly welcomed by Juan, who has been operating the Airbnb since 2019, which I suppose hasn’t been the easiest of times. He either inherited or took over the B&B from his mother, I’m not actually sure which, but it’s a lovely oasis of a place only a street or two away from the centre of the town.

We sat around for a little while in the garden while the room was finished, dumped our stuff inside, and then went for a walk to grab some lunch. Would you believe we found an Irish pub in the middle of Granada, Nicaragua, though there wasn’t actually much Irish food on the menu. I’m guessing that not every Irish pub sells nachos, ceviche, tamales and all manner of Spanish food but it didn’t really matter. We ordered nachos. Wrong move. It wasn’t long before Mandy was wearing some of the nachos all down the front of her good clothes that she had pulled out from her luggage because ‘if she didn’t wear them now when would she wear them’!

Basically abandoned lunch and raced back to our room to try and soak the garments and get rid of the salsa. Used up all of our laundry liquid, so charged down to try and find a mini mart somewhere in the city that would sell nappy wash solution. Actually found some, even though it was a Sunday afternoon. Back to the room yet again where we treated the clothes and left them to soak while Mandy changed into her not best clothes, and then we left again for our walk.

We went right down to the lake along the Granada mall, where lots of local families were wandering and spoiling the kids. Not much to see down at the waterfront although they were a few eating places, a lovely plaza honouring the country’s writers, and a boat at the jetty that was obviously being chartered for a party in the afternoon.

Lazy afternoon in the Airbnb’s lovely garden.

Dinner time saw hundreds of people occupying every available table down the plaza under fairy lights being served by the various restaurants down the strip. Lovely atmosphere. We chose a tapas bar, and had probably the nicest meal of the trip.
