Both in terms of distance and in terms of time, its the halfway point of the holiday, and we are the furthest away from home that we are going. It's the tenth country we've visited and its certainly unique. Where else in the world would the most common natural devastation be caused by volcanoes going off that melt glaciers which result in huge flooding?
Today we were off to the Skaftafell National Park where the Vatnajokull glacier is, way down in the south east corner of Iceland. It's the largest glacier in Europe, and one of the largest in the world, over 8000km2. It's close to the glacier that contains the volcano that's currently erupting, but isn't the same one. The usual National Park information centre and displays, then we hiked off down to the glacier in the hail, humming little hail songs in the hope of keeping the water out (with no effect of course). If you want to go hiking on the glacier you have to go on a proper tour with the right safety equipment, so we settled for a 'visit the edge' variety. Spectacular scenery.
Lunch at the only petrol station for miles around, then an afternoon mooching about the hostel, watching birds and avoiding the rain.
