The M5 was at a crawl this morning courtesy of a disemboweled caravan strewn across a couple of the lanes, but after we got past that we made good time. Enjoyed morning tea on the grass under the trees at one of the M5's service centres, and arrived in Salisbury just on lunch time. No parking this time, so we had to pay to park in the supermarket carpark, and then walk to the hotel.
Spent a few hours wandering through the town, having lunch and enjoying the sights. Being Saturday the markets were in full swing as they have been every week since 1315, and there was produce of all sorts to buy. Everybody was out enjoying the sunshine, and making a point of thanking us for bringing it with us, although the locals are starting to grumble that it's too hot with temperatures in the mid 20s and minimums in double figures (shock, horror). After watching the swans, and taking some time to smell the roses, we searched through a couple of opportunity shops and bought our formal outfits to wear to the Henley Regatta next week.
Wandered around the historic part of town near the cathedral, looking at the museums and medieval halls, and the Close around the cathedral. Went into the cathedral cloisters, but we will have to go back to look inside as there was a concert in progress.
We have a luxury hotel room (at least by hostel standards) to make up for this being the last booked accommodation of the holiday, and so we used the TV and watched a bit of Wimbledon before dinner.
