Thursday Heidelberg
Drove the rental car down the motorway close to Koblenz, then down to the Moselle Valley towards Trier. Stopped at a roadside stop for morning tea -- very swish. Dog food and water in bowls for the dogs. Hot food, drinks, cakes, maps, groceries, internet. High-class restrooms where its often waterless and you have to wave your hands in the general direction of things to flush or get towels or operate taps. The receipt of your admission is then rebated against purchases. Stopped at Trier for lunch, but we were only in the suburbs, so we went a bit closer and walked into the town. Saw lots of Roman walls and ruins -- the best preserved in Germany so they say. Then on to Saarbruken and on side roads to see the view, and then back onto the motorway to Heidelberg. Mandy loved the view. The very helpful PDA ran out of batteries just as it got us on to the Heidelberg interchange, so we went the last 10 km without maps or GPS. Turns out the exit I took to work out where we were was the correct one, and a service station pointed out how to get to the hotel. Check-in, then took the car back in the dark with Ashley's help. Sussed out the morning bus, then picked up an eclectic assortment of goodies for tea in the supermarket. Nice looking room, but hopelessly inept shower.
