Up early and off after breakfast to explore what we wanted to see in Bangkok. Bit of a mistake as nothing opens till 10, so we just sat around. Went to an IT mall for an hour or so, but didn't see anything special. Back to the hotel to pack and check out, then cloaked our baggage. Walked down to the skytrain and caught one to the end of the line which was the ferry terminal. Eventually worked out which was the tourist ferry and boarded for six stops to Memorial Bridge where we got off.
Saw lots of local sites and monuments -- King Buddha Yodha statue, Wat Rama Burana, then had lunch at KFC by pointing. Past the Royal Theatre and the giant swing (I kid you not), City Hall and King Rama III statue and pagoda to the Democracy Monument where we regained our breath. Down to Mahakan Fortress and city parapet before a stiff climb up the Golden Mount to the temple. Great view of the city, underwhelming Buddha. Caught the longtailed boat back down the canal to the hotel. Afternoon tea of cappuccinos and ice cream sundaes at the Plaza, then tea at the same Thai restaurant, though we were already full.
Uncloaked our baggage and took a taxi to the station, and caught the 7:40 train to Chang Mai. First-class sleeper, 2 to a cabin.
