I'm really disappointed. We've been in Mexico almost two weeks, and this is our last day, but I've yet to meet a Pancho, or a Cisco, see a cactus, or a desert, or stumble across guys having a siesta outside their hacienda with a huge sombrero shielding their face. Hollywood has a lot to answer for. Maybe it's a lot like that up near the northern border, but in the areas we've been to, it's been lush and green and almost tropical, and it's been full of hard working people who never seem to take a break. Well, unless you're a construction worker, but maybe they have a union.
Prices here in Cancun/Tulum have increased exponentially from the rest of the country, and there are notices everywhere asking for tips. There are his and hers ATMS - one dispenses Pesos and one dispenses Dollars. Can't imagine why. But apart from this little part of the country, it's been a genuinely nice, unspoilt part of the world, and worth a visit. Not at all what we expected.
It's the start of the wet season, and it rained pretty much all of last night and most of this morning. When it eased off late morning we decided to go for a walk along the main road, check out the shops, and grab some lunch with our leftover pesos. Seven little potato skins almost bankrupted us. The waiter was very apologetic about the small size of the potato skins. "Perhaps you would like to order another serve", he suggested.
Rain stopped for most of the afternoon so Mandy sat on the beach and contemplated the meaning of life, while I wrestled with the intricacies of doing on-line checkins for tomorrow's flights via a public wifi service in the bar.
Had an early dinner in the beachfront restaurant as we watched the next rain storm roll in. Serious rain. The waiters barricaded the doors with chairs to stop the wind and rain getting in. We have a 1am pickup for our shuttle to the airport, so we're about to have to deal with two flights and a seriously big airport again after an all nighter with no sleep. Wish us luck.
