Bike Riding

A day where nothing seemed to go right. The hostel owner is not about, and we can't get things to work - like the wi-fi and the hot water. We weren't sure whether the bicycles at the hostel were able to be borrowed, so we headed off on the metro to the city and spent some time finding a McDonalds so we could get internet access and check the latest news about flights to Iceland, given that we are booked to fly there in 2 days time.

Then we spent a good hour or so trying to find one of the free bicycle hire racks that are meant to be around the city, in order that we could save time by riding around rather than walking. Well, at least the theory was good, but of course we really didn't save any time. Finally found a couple of bikes, rode down past the City Hall, Tivoli (kind of a large Luna Park), Central Station and across to the island of Christiana where we saw Our Saviours Church with its tall, climbable tower, the Arsenal and the Opera House.

Back along the road with all the old bastions which have transformed into the community of Christiana in the 1970s. Kind of a hippy commune of thousands that's supposedly into self-rule. Still going strong, but you don't pull out cameras while you are there and, judging from the grot and graffiti, its not a thriving place.

Headed up the canal to Amalienborg Castle. There were long queues of people waiting to tour the apartments that Mary and Frederick are renovating, and where they will eventually live. Back past all kinds of lovely, old buildings to the station where we returned our bikes, and took the train back to the hostel.
