Didn't get much sleep last night thanks to the English World Cup match. The English supporters from our hotel got kicked out of the pub about 2pm, and then congregated on the front lawn of our hotel just outside our window, where they stayed until police suggested they move inside about 4am. At least they were happy drunks.
Joined the congregation of York Minster for the 10am service. Even though it was tagged 'modern worship', it was a standard Anglican service out of the prayer book with processions, choirs and responses. However, the choir was angelic and we got to see the cathedral without the busloads of visitors. The bell peels went for almost an hour before the service, and we assume that it was being done by bell ringers.
Wandered through the Shambles before the crowds arrived, so it was almost empty, and enjoyed a coffee for morning tea. After wandering around the centre of town, we went to the international market for lunch. Turns out the market moves from city to city every week, and several of the stalls were quite chuffed that we remembered them from Belfast, and came back for lunch.
Visited the railway museum which was very good, and saw a Japanese bullet train, the royal carriages since Queen Victoria, and a Flying Scotsman exhibit, as well as lots of other trains and memorabilia. All kind of activities happening for the kids.
Wandered around the Museum Gardens and looked at the ruins of the St Mary Abbey, then went back to the hotel early for a relaxing afternoon of reading and watching the F1 Grand Prix, and Australia's first World Cup match.
