Sunday Zurich
Checked out and walked down to the station. Being Sunday there were lots of groups and families heading off to the snow. Best train yet. Two storey, really quiet and we had the whole first-class carriage to ourselves for the first hour. Sunny day so great view of the mountains and lake the whole way. Found the Zürich hostel amongst all the back alleys. It's a themed hostel where each room is named after a rock act. We were in the 'Deep Purple' room, almost the only ones in all the four floors. Spent the afternoon wandering round the old town of Zürich. First stop was to climb to the top of the tower in the cathedral. Had a lovely view of the city which sparkled in the sunshine. Along the river past lots of churches, and Lindenhoff which was a small park at the highest point of the old town. Wandered down Bahnhoffstrasse which is an incredibly pricey shopping street. Luckily everything was shut being Sunday. Then Mandy and I went and sat in the sun with half of Zürich on the banks of the river. Mild and sunny -- the warmest day of the trip. Switzerland prices are so expensive. Men's haircuts cost $50, basic hamburger meal in a restaurant starts at $28, McDonald's meal is $12. Could only afford a takeaway burger for tea.
