Our day to explore the island. Planned to catch the island bus from place to place, but as we walked up the road from the resort we went past a place renting a small four-wheel-drive for 800 baht (supposedly including insurance, but I was glad I never had to find out), and we decided to live rashly. Gave us a great deal of flexibility.
Started off going clockwise around the island, stopping at Maenum first for an explore and morning tea. Then on to the North East corner where we visited the big bhudda and the temple. Down to the South East corner and the second-largest town - Lamai. Walked up and down the shops and markets. Bought some boardies for me, thongs for Mandy and DVDs for Brendan. Had a super-sized lunch at makers -- Mandy was hungry. We walked down to Manai beach and sat around watching the sites and food vendors plying the beach for a while, then walked back to the car through one of the plush resorts.
Drove back up the east coast to Chaweng which is the main tourist drag. Walked down miles of night markets and bought Deb a scarf and another DVD. Had tea/supper of a decent cappuccino at Starbucks, then walked the miles of markets back down the other side. Coaxed the car back home, and to bed. Forgot to mention that after breakfast we walked down to the beach across the spit, to swim at a completely deserted, secluded coral bay which Mandy loved. P.S. heard 'Eternal Flame' in the market at Chaweng!
