Well the day started well, but went downhill from there. The run south through Brisbane via the Gateway Bridge was an excellent run, and we found a nice roadside stop for morning tea near Beenleigh. However, the signs to bypass the Gold Coast on the highway were less than explicit and we got lost trying to turn off to Nerang. After some lengthy detours, we found Nerang which didn't have any auto bank machines. We were broke, out of petrol and about to hit bush. To make it worse, the auto bank at the service station was malfunctioning, but we managed to charge our petrol purchase.
We arrived at Binna Burra for a late lunch to find that somebody had set fire to a large tree the night before and it was still burning inside. This necessitated closing all the caravan sites as it could fall down on any one of them. So after lunch we took the caravan all the way down the range again, and headed towards Byron Bay. We arrived there just as it was getting dark, after an unexpectedly long and tiring day.
