Broken Hill

Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia

Spent the day looking around Broken Hill. Visited the Royal Flying Doctor base for a talk and tour, then on to a park with Pro Hart sculptures for morning tea, the Ant Hill art gallery, trades hall council building, the town's information centre, a scenic lookout then Sturt Park for lunch.

After lunch we went to the Geo Centre which is a wonderful interactive museum about mining and Broken Hill, another scenic lookout, then to White’s mineral art gallery and mining museum run by an ex miner using dioramas and models to show what it was like in a mine without actually going underground.

Out to Pro Hart’s gallery with paintings by Picasso, Dobell, Boyd, Roberts and Wheatley – even a few Daws, then a few kilometres out of town to a group of sculptures carved out of sandstone and set on a hill visible from miles around.  We reached it after a 30 minute climb just before sunset, which was terrific light to see them by.

A bit of shopping and a late tea.  The town itself is pretty dilapidated, and doesn’t look very prosperous, but there’s a lot to see and do, especially to do with the arts.
