The halfway point of the trip, and if we stay true to form we should be travelling about 21,000 kms all up.
Left our shady campsite and headed out to Karijini National Park. At the suggestion of the Port Headland information centre we decided not to take our van into the national park or on to the Mt Tom Price road. Instead we left it in an expensive caravan park behind the roadhouse, and did a day tour of some of the park. We saw Yampire Gorge as we drove into the park, then had lunch at Dales Gorge. We walked down a steep track into the gorge and along to Circular Pool where the boys had a quick swim (both the weather and the water were much cooler) then walked to the lookout over Fortescue Falls.
After deciding it would be well and truly dark before we negotiated the dirt to any other parts of the park, we drove back out, and did a side trip to Wittenoom which is now a ghost town (well virtually). Although there is little left of the town, the road does lead for a nice drive through Wittenoom Gorge. Signs warning you to avoid asbestos by staying in your car with the windows up are everywhere.
