Monkey Mia, Western Australia, Australia

Talk about a procession of caravans! It was just a continuous stream, most leaving Broome on the 1st September, and many wanting to be in Perth by the weekend.  Strangely, not many seem to want a detour to Coral Bay and Monkey Mia.  Called in at Hamelin Pool for morning tea, and there turned out to be so much to do that we didn't leave till lunchtime.  We saw the old telegraph repeater station, which used to be the repeater point between Geraldton and Carnarvon.  We saw a video on the stromatolites which are live rocks near the sea edge that produced the earth’s oxygen millions of years ago, and then walked down the boardwalk to see them.  They grow half a millimetre each year.

We also saw a shellblock quarry where they cut (with chainsaws) blocks of shells that have cemented themselves together, and are suitable for building houses and other structures from.  Later on we saw some examples in Denham, which we finally got to for a very late lunch.  After a visit to the post office, we headed off to Monkey Mia.  A great resort, though a little pricey.  We attended the ranger’s slide show at teatime which was very informative, and the kids learned their dolphin etiquette for tomorrow.
