Did a day trip today. We drove the two kilometres into Ravensthorpe, bought petrol and unhitched the van behind the Shell service station. Then we drove the 200 kilometres out to Wave Rock. It was mostly sealed, with a 26 kilometre dirt section of good quality in the middle. Nothing really between Ravensthorpe and Hyden. We had morning tea at Hyden in the grounds of the CWA due to the playground, then went out the three kilometres to the rock.
Our guess is that its being cared for by the local council rather than by the national park association, or at least that's what it looks like. The rock itself is impressive, but its surroundings are pretty ordinary. It’s not as big as I expected – only 100 metres long and 15 metres high – the photos make it seem much bigger. It’s not out in the middle of the desert – in fact it’s hard to get a picture of it without all the neighbouring trees and shrubs in the way. They have erected a stone fence on the top of it (goodness knows why) and it’s hard to get a good photo. It seems all the commercial photos have been retouched.
Also visited Hippo’s Yawn, another rock formation close by, before driving back to Hyden for lunch. Chased a fire engine around town to get another photo for Brendan's hunt, before returning to Ravensthorpe. A close by roadside stop for the night, where we listened to the Brownlow Medal count in the car.
