Coober Pedy

Marla, South Australia, Australia
Saturday, April 9, 1988

Spent the morning wandering around the town. We visited the Big Winch lookout, and the Catholic and Anglican catacomb churches. Coober Pedy has certainly come on from my recollections. Now there are over 2000 people, mainly living underground. While it looks like a mining town (dirty, dusty and lots of junk and a rubbish), some money is starting to be invested and the tourist trade is growing. There are now hundreds of trees, all about three years old. We expect that water is now more plentiful, and in a few years time it will look very different. The old desalination distillery is no more.

Left just before lunch, which was eaten with thousands of flies as guests at a roadside stop. Reached our expected destination of Cadney Homestead at afternoon tea. It will be great in a few years, but they were constructing with generators and you couldn't hear yourself think, so we pushed on to Marla to a very pleasant surprise. A green oasis with a restaurant, takeaway, grocery, post office and swimming pool. Power was an additional six dollars so we did without.
