Kakadu

Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory, Australia
Sunday, May 1, 1988

Went to church at Jabiru, which is no mean feat -- a 90 km round trip, so you've got to be keen. It was a Uniting Church that shares the use of the building with the local Catholic church. It had walls that opened around two thirds of the building, and a plain concrete floor on which they laid a mat for the children's talk. There were about 40 people, including the Mudies and ourselves and about 10 aborigines, so we certainly swelled the numbers. The lay pastor was known to the Mudies, and he was expecting to see us some time.

After lunch it was back to the caravan and we went on the Mamukala Nature walk, though we probably went at the wrong time of the day to see much. The afternoon was spent at the pool, and the evening barricaded against the mozzies.

People say you either love or hate Kakadu. I didn't have either reaction. I was disappointed, though. Not being able to get to Obiri Rock and Jim Jim Falls didn't help. On the whole, though, it just didn't inspire me.
