Mount Isa

Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia
Saturday, May 7, 1988

The earliest start yet -- 7:50am for one of the longest days. Mind you, half the caravan park had left before six o'clock. Good road for an hour or so to the border, when you can tell you are in Queensland. All made roads, but very narrow and you get off the side every time another vehicle approaches. The road was built during the war by the Americans with limited money and materials so it follows every undulation like a rollercoaster ride. Made Camooweal for lunch -- hasn't changed one iota in 20 years, though it did have one of the nicest parks we have encountered.

Mount Isa about three o'clock, and the inevitable swim. About 10° cooler and little humidity. After a swim we began to feel human, and wonder if Barkly Homestead was real or just imaginary.
