Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy, South Australia, Australia
Saturday, July 20, 1996

Beautiful sunny weather, but blowing a gale so it felt cold. We battled winds from in front of us early in the day, but got some assistance later as the road went more northerly.

Arrived at Coober Pedy for lunch at a big new caravan park.  Still no grass anywhere, but the facilities were first rate.  Much better than the portable loos on the dirt patch last time.  Speaking of which, the Central Caravan Park has closed and nobody has bought the site since 1994 when it went on sale.

Wandered around the town all afternoon.  Went to a number of opal showrooms and underground motels (both Flag and Best Western also have motels underground now), to the Opal Cave again (it's changed a lot in 30 years), the underground church, the big winch lookout, the wind generator and power station.

Needed to put 20¢ in the slot to get water for the showers.
