An early start as we were aiming to catch the 11am gorge cruise at Fitzroy Crossing. This we did with no time to spare, and enjoyed an 1½ hour cruise and commentary. Seems the gorge is formed by the remains of a reef (though not coral) formed under the seabed many moons ago and now exposed. Freshwater crocodiles were everywhere much to Ashley's delight.
Following lunch in the grounds of the gorge, we ascertained that the road to Tunnel Creek National Park and Windjana Gorge National Park, though dirt, were passable to two wheel drives with care, so we got all adventurous and turned off the bitumen. We were beginning to feel that we could get to the end of the Kimberley without actually having seen anything. A four-wheel-drive or better still a helicopter is a must to get to things.
We managed to ford the one crossing which was under water, after I carefully waded across and back, though I asked a four-wheel-drive to hang around while we tried. Reached Tunnel Creek at 4.00pm and walked about halfway in the dark till the water got up to my chest. Drove on and reached Windjana Gorge as darkness fell. No mozzies, so we sat outside for tea which was very pleasant.
