Broome, Western Australia, Australia
Monday, August 19, 1996

I don't think we ever decided whether this was a work or a rest day. We were moved to a better site out of the shadow of the toilet block, and I took the opportunity of the move to go and get two new (secondhand) tyres for the caravan.  Bought eight ply light truck tyres, to find in amazement that the old ones had been two ply!  That wrote off most of the morning, though the kids did get some school work done.

After lunch on the foreshore we lazed around and the boys had a swim.  About afternoon tea time we went for a drive and wandered out the deep water jetty, then visited the Japanese cemetery.

Broome it is a fascinating place.  Genuinely old meets new.  Nearly every shop in town is made from white corrugated iron, with a verandah.  No buildings can be over two stories.  Lots of old shops have been retained, including the 1916 Sun outdoor picture theatre where you sit in deckchairs.  Everything in the town is nicely done, but not overhyped.
