Moved on, but only a short way, to Karratha and we were all set up by morning tea. The contrast of 20 kilometres is immense. Roebourne is a ghetto next to Wickham which is a mining town. It is dry, dusty, dirty and decrepit. Karratha is clean, attractive, and modern with a big modern shopping arcade complex. Goodness knows why the difference. Same people – same mining company.
We called a lay day. Did all kinds of odd jobs like replacing a globe on the van, and similarly earth shatteringly important tasks. Just before lunch, we headed off to the shopping complex. We didn't spend much, although I did get a haircut, but we wandered around till 4.00 and emerged much relaxed.
Started eating tea outside, but surprisingly the mozzies were out with a vengeance, and just when our bites were disappearing too.
