Margaret River, Western Australia, Australia
Tuesday, September 17, 1996

A bleak day and a late start. It was good to be sleeping on a level bed again with the roof up, and we all had a good catch up sleep.

Did a drive around Bunbury which was beset by gale force winds and 3 to 4 metre seas.  The waves were breaking across the sea wall, and foam whipped up by the seas was blowing across the roads.  Even sand drifts across the road on occasions.  Climbed the lookout tower with difficulty, but all we saw was the next belt of the rain on its way.

Reached Busselton for lunch.  A lovely seaside town, and geared for tourists with caravan parking signposted.  Had a play at an adventure playground to keep warm, then moved on to Margaret River.  I was really disappointed – I didn't see Shane Gould anywhere.  Kind of like Byron Bay, with a distinct surfing flavour.

Camped at a national park campground called Contos Field near the Lake Cave.  Individual bays are arranged around a common grassed area, and a few pit toilets.  Only a couple of other people to be seen.  Would be great in nice weather.
