We figured that we probably shouldn't be camping where we were, so we moved on early to Manjimup where we had breakfast and a walk around. We then drove all the way back to Pemberton for the 11:00 mill tour through the Bunnings Mill in town. There are some big saws in there! Two full lines were in production, sawing and trimming Karri. Very noisy inside until on the stroke of midday every machine simultaneously went quiet.
Then on through Northcliffe and Walpole to the Valley of the Giants near Nornalup. Last week they officially opened a new treetop walk which takes you on a bridge like structure up gentle grades until you are over 40 metres off the ground, level with the tops of many of the Karri trees. All up, you walk about 400 m, with a bridge swaying in the wind beneath you. A great experience, though not everybody felt secure.
We camped a kilometre or so down the hill at a little barbecue area just big enough for one caravan. It was a beautiful setting, and we sat around a campfire toasting marshmallows, until a dying candle burned out on to the caravan table and spoilt the night. Probably the nicest night of the whole trip. Oh, we also did a board walk through the giant Karri forest.
