Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Australia
Thursday, September 26, 1996

Our day to look around Kalgoorlie. We started by going to the Royal Flying Doctor Service base at the airport to get a photo for Brendan's hunt, then had a drive around Boulder.  Went to the lookout over the giant pit where they are blasting and digging for gold.  Its 4km x 2km, and the biggest in Australia, gradually turning what was the most valuable plot of Australia into, well, nothing.  The rest of the morning was spent wandering up and down the main drag admiring the old buildings – especially the pubs.  Visited the local branch of the Western Australian museum which had a good gold and miner flavour.  Went up to the top of the poppet head and saw the $200,000 gold ingot in the vault.

Lunch was in the local park which had kangaroos, emus, parrots and 179 primary school kids on an end of the term excursion.  After lunch we did a big shop to stock up for the Nullabor leg.
